Significance
Lt Col Fordyce was killed in action on 6 November 1851 in the Waterkloof in the Fort Beaufort District during the 8th Frontier War.
He was the senior British Officer to be killed during the Frontier Wars.
IN MEMORY OF LIEUT COL JOHN FORDYCE OF THE LXXIV HIGHLANDERS AND OF THOSE BRAVE MEN WHO FELL WITH HIM IN THE ACTION OF WATERKLOOF ON THE MEMORABLE 6 NOV 1851 THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED AS A TRIBUTE OF RESPECT AND ADMIRATION BY INHABITANTS OF THE EASTERN PROVINCES OF THE COLONY OF THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE
The Memorial was unveiled in August 1854 and paid by public subscription.
