St Mungo's Church Christmas Day Massacres Memorial

Situated in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa
32 degrees 40 minutes 10 seconds south
26 degrees 53 minutes 4 seconds east

Approximately 18 kms from Alice on the R345 between Alice and Hogsback
Turn left onto the dirt road towards Elundini Backpackers
St Mungo's Church is on the right approximately 2 kms from the R345

Significance
The memorial at St Mungo's Church in the Tyumie River valley commemorates the 41 settlers, mostly retired soldiers of the 91st Regiment and their sons, who were killed in the Christmas Day attacks of 1850 at the opening of the 8th Frontier War when Ngqika warriors attacked the military villages of Woburn, Auckland, and Juanasberg without warning.





This plaque was originally displayed in the Alice Town Hall
and has since been transferred to the Fort Beaufort Museum
