Significance
Nongqause was a Xhosa prophet whose prophecies resulted
in a belief that culminated in the Xhosa Cattle Killing and famine
of 1856-1857 in which approximately 40,000 people starved to death.
She survived the famine and lived the rest of her life on a farm near Alexandria in the Eastern Cape Province, where she died in 1898.
