Significance
On 6 May 1902 at Holkrans, men of the Zulu abaQulusi tribe attacked a Boer commando that had been taking their livestock. The abaQulusi prevailed and retrieved their cattle. There were heavy casualties on both sides, with 56 Boers (out of 75) and 50 abaQulusi killed. The battle was the first between an indigenous impi and the Boers in the Anglo Boer War (1899-1902).
