WELCOME TO THE CAPE TOWN LABOUR CORPS MEMORIAL This memorial honours over 1700 service personnel who died in Africa or at sea serving with South African labour units during the First World War (1914-1918) and were not previously commemorated elsewhere. Many South African military labourers undertook crucial logistics and support roles, making an essential contribution to the war effort. The work was hard and at times dangerous. Each individual is commemorated upon an Africa Iroko hardwood post which is inscribed with their name. The memorial was designed in South Africa in consultation with local communities Built and maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the memorial was unveiled in 2025 and is a beautiful space for reflection that ensures the contribution of all is respected and remembered.
