Significance
Born in Uitenhage, Lieutenant Colonel Crowe was awarded the Victoria Cross during the Indian Mutiny. He was the first South Africa born Victoria Cross recipient. He served in the British Army for 29 years and died at Penge in Surrey in 1876.

After his neglected grave was traced in West Norwood Cemetery, his remains were reinterred in the Uitenhage MOTH Garden of Remembrance in 1977.

Following the sale of the MOTH premises, his remains were reinterred in the Heroes Acre in the Jubilee Park Cemetery, Uitenhage in 2019.
