Obituary: Colonel George Duxbury 1917-2011

Colonel George Duxbury, 1917·2011 A Memorial Tea was held for the late Colonel G R Duxbury, JCD, FSAMA, at San Sereno Retirement Village in Bryanston on 18 June 2011, attended by friends and family. Colonel Duxbury, who joined the staff of the South African National War Museum (now Ditsong National Museum of Military History) in 1948, served as its Director from 1951 until his retirement in 1987. During that time, he played a significant role in the South African Museums Association (SAMA) and also actively encouraged the formation of the South African Military History Society. He was the founder and former officer commanding, Westpark Commando (later redesignated Sandton Commando). His wife, Uylet, passed away in 2005. He is survived by his son Raymond and daughters Sylvia and Claudia.
