At the end of 1990/beginning of 1991, four military history enthusiasts, namely Selby Webster, Tom Ely, Howard Hordy, and Ken Gibbon, started meeting on a regular basis to share their interest and knowledge. They formed the Benoni Military History Society. By the mid-1990s, the Society was drawing members from further afield, especially from Springs and Brakpan, and so it was decided to change the name to the East Rand Military History Society.

We are a small but keen society, averaging thirty members. We meet on the last Sunday of every month (except December). At these meetings we have invited speakers on a wide range of military subjects. Our March and September meetings take the form of a field trip, usually lasting the best part of a day. Our most recent field trip was a return visit to the headquarters of the Transvaal Scottish Regiment, where their museum curator, Peter Digby, has recently opened up the Medals Room.

The East Rand Military History Society is an honorary member of the South African Military History Society. From their newsletter, we have been able to make contact with some of their members and speakers. We value this contact with the SAMHS and appreciate speakers travelling the distance to address us.

In January this year, we moved our venue to the Lions Village Community Centre, 111 Howard Avenue, Benoni (west of the CBD). For further information about our Society, please telephone the Secretary, Judy Thomas (See details above).
