I am writing to you to draw the attention of those members of the Military History Society interested in the Anglo-Boer War to a fine collection of memorabilia which I came across quite by chance and which may not be well-known outside the area.
On a trip up to Gauteng from Port Elizaheth a few weeks ago, my wife and I decided to break our journey in the Bloemfontein area We turned off the Nl Bloemfontein Bypass onto the R700 by the Shell Ultra City and headed towards town to look for a likely place, following a sign to a guest house named Tredenham. A large bar lounge on the upper floor is devoted to one of the most comprehensive collections of Anglo-Boer War maps, photographs, cartoons and artifacts that I have seen and includes a fine set of coloured miniature paintings on glass slides which can be illuminated. The staff told me that this exhibition was put together by Dr van Dyk of Bloemfontein.
This collection is well worth a visit, even if you do not have time to sample the fine food and other delights. (By the way I do not have shares in this establishment!)
Yours sincerely
Richard Tomlinson
