Society news

The well-attended monthly meetings of the Society have been continued and a list of the lectures delivered during the second half of 1985 and during 1986 is given below/appears elsewhere in the journal, and indicates a continued high standard.

At the Annual General Meeting held on 10th April, 1986, Mr Ian S. Uys was unanimously elected Chairman of the Society and the following members were elected to the Executive Committee:-

The Roderick G. Murchison Memorial Prize for the best contribution to the Military History Journal in 1985 was awarded to Cmdt S. Bourquin for his article on Col A.W. Durnford which appeared in the June issue of the Journal.

The Chairman, Mr Ian Uys, is to be congratulated on the publication of yet another book, namely, Longueval, which might be regarded as a companion volume to his previous work on Delville Wood and which deals with the German side of this battle.

The Society arranged a one-day tour to places of interest in the Pretorta area on Sunday, 16th March, such as the Air Force Memorial on Bays Hill, Melrose House in Pretoria Smuts House Museum at Doornkloof and Fort Schanskop. The outing was well attended.

The Durban branch arranged a one-day outing to the Colenso area on Sunday 25 May when Maj Darrell D. Hall spoke in detail on the role of the British Artillery in the Battle of Colenso on 15 December 1899, and the loss of Col C.J. Long's guns. A repeat of this outing was held on Sunday 31 August 1986.

Arrangements were also made with Col P.M.J. McGregor for members of the Society to visit the Air Force Museum at Lanseria Airport on Sunday 16 November.

Both the Durban and Cape Town branches of the Society have continued with their monthly meetings and other activities. (A report on the activities of the Durban branch appeared in the June, 1986, issue of the Journal).
