contents page

This guide is a brief introduction to the architecture and history of Durban. In 64 pages in colour, it gives recognition to all its peoples and their contributions and provides glimpses of a remarkable city rich in heritage. The main objective of the publication, and one of the tenets of the Heritage Trust, is to draw attention to the fragile richness of this legacy - a distinctly non-renewable resource - and to introduce visitors and locals to an extraordinary polyglot past.

The guide deals with the natural history; the surviving open spaces - the tiny surviving links with its environmental past. It briefly describes a very long prehistory; more recent waves of refugees, settlers and immigrant peoples and their origins; military and political life; culture, religion, recreation and sport; technology, science and education; and trade, commerce and industry. It includes details of monuments, statues, local saints and myths.

To enable some understanding of the local architecture a section is devoted to townscape - the quality of urban environment that reaches beyond individual buildings. The development of Durban's historic architecture is told briefly. There are descriptions of the significant works of architecture to be found in and around the city: the City Centre; Point and Beachfront; the Berea and inner suburbs; and the newly incorporated areas to the north, south and west. Other noteworthy buildings are noted.

To enable a greater depth of understanding a list of appropriate publications - further reading - is included as well as lists of local tours, museums and galleries. The guide also incorporates a set of excursions for those wishing to explore the City, whether by foot, car or taxi. Three maps are included in a pocket at the back of the book and present three scales of the city - the city centre; the old Borough between the Indian Ocean, the Berea Ridge and the Umbilo and Umgeni Rivers. There is also a map at a much larger scale of the post 1994 city.

Below is shown the contents page of the book, and below that the front cover of this wonderful, fact-filled, profusely illustrated and very interesting guide. The book is suitable for readers of any age, and for anyone wishing to learn more about the many fascinating secrets of Durban. Whether you are a local resident, a person living elsewhere in South Africa, or an overseas visitor / tourist to Durban, this book will tell you everything you need to know about our City. And more.

At Thy Call
Date Posted: 6th Feb 2005

I have just published a book that details the Angolan War of 1987/8 and takes the unique approach of looking at it from the perspective of the troops involved; those who fought in Operations Moduler and Hooper, including the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale and the Calueque Dam incident. The book is based on the war diary I wrote during this time and for more detailed information about the book, please visit http://www.atthycall.com

General Jan Smuts and his Long Ride
by Taffy and David Shearing

A NEW BOOK IN THE CAPE COMMANDO SERIES:
The epic journey by General Jan Smuts during the Anglo-Boer War is retold by Taffy and David Shearing who specialise in the Cape Colony's involvement during 1901-1902.

Follow the Smuts story from December 1900 and discover how this Boer leader, faced with overwhelming opposition from the British, decided to campaign in the Cape Colony. He raced through the Orange Free State and crossed the Orange River on 4 September, 1901.

In twelve action-packed weeks, Smuts and his small force fought the British, hunger and starvation, and endured appalling storms in the eastern Cape. They reached the Zuurberg without food and ate the toxic cycad fruit. Smuts and many of his men were desperately ill, but survived.

He arrived in Vanrhynsdorp with his command intact. For the next four months he waged guerilla warfare until he was called to the Peace negotiations.

The Shearings have followed the Smuts route from the Orange River to Okiep. They have also traced the routes of Jaap van Deventer and a party of stragglers, including Deneys Reitz.

A Canadian Mounted Rifleman at War, 1899-1902
The Reminiscences of A.E. Hilder, edited and annotated by A.G. Morris.

Albert Edward Hilder (1878-1947) joined the Militia of the Royal Canadian Dragoons in 1897, after emigrating from England to Canada. When war was declared in October 1899, Hilder volunteered for duty in South Africa and served two tours of duty between December 1899 and August 1902.

His writings are rare accounts of the Canadian action in the Anglo-Boer War, as seen from the perspective of the mounted infantry, and are clear, well-written and oftne humorous descriptions of the lives of ordinary soldiers.

Bugs in Armor
by Robert Bwire
I wish to draw your attention to "Bugs in Armor" with a forward by General Albert Jan van Leusden (Royal Netherlands Air Force), which I believe is of interest to the members of the South African Military History Society. The book can be ordered at www.iuniverse.com (also available for browsing online); www.amazon.com; www.bn.com and www.borders.com.
Description:
From military expeditions in antiquity to peacekeeping missions in the twentieth century, malaria has been the single most important medical problem confronting nonimmune troops in malarious regions. Its devastating effects were clearly visible during both world wars. During the Macedonian campaign in World War I, an exasperated French general could not counterattack as he desperately reported, "Regret that my army is in hospital with malaria." Malaria also popped up in Korea, Vietnam and during Operation Restore Hope in Somalia. Often malaria causes more casualties than enemy action. A 1772 Dutch force sent to quell rioting slaves in Surinam lost three-quarters of its troops to malaria, and only handful to the rebels.
Bugs in Armor takes the reader on a historical journey of military expeditions and their encounters with a relentless bug—the malaria parasite. It is also a story of how this confrontation fuelled research that gave the world a better understanding of the nature of malaria, its treatment and prevention.

THE BATTLES AND BATTLEFIELDS OF THE ANGLO-BOER 1899-1902
by Anthony Baker.
This is a study of the significant battles fought in the Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902. It describes the battles in detail and can be used as a guide for anyone visiting the battlefields. The text and maps clearly explain to the reader the problems facing the commanders and how the battles were fought, the location and movements of units &c. The reputation of some of the British generals has been sullied from their failures in the field, for example Buller, here will be found a detailed account of what he faced, and with the problems he had to overcome together with the forces that were at his disposal, the outcome could not have been unexpected. The British Army that fought the war was the largest force until World War I that Britain fielded and it was supported by numerous units of volunteers raised throughout the Empire. When it went to war in Southern Africa it faced problems initially of being considerably out numbered, and later when reenforcements arrived of fighting a war in a vast theatre in very difficult conditions. Its lines of communications were limited to a few vulnerable railway lines. The Army had to create organisations such as divisions and control the war without the benefit of a trained corps of staff officers. In addition to the maps, there are orders of battle of the British Army, as well as indices listing personalities, places and units. The author has also written a comment on the infamous "Concentration Camps". 240 pages 60 colour maps, 210 x 295mm

The European Volunteers in the Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902
by Dr Claus Nordbruch
Written in German, French and English 256 pages, hard-cover, large size, ISBN 0-9584131-8-5 Price R180.00 - US-$ 30.00 - DM 49.80 (add postage)
P.O. Box 71380, ZA-0041 Die Wilgers, South Africa, Tel: +27 83 2910095, Fax: +27.12.8110445, e-mail: clausnor@smartnet.co.za

The Second Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1900 was something out of the ordinary compared to the wars of that time – e.g. the Franco-Prussian War (1870/71), the Spanish-American War (1898) or the Russo-Japanese War (1904/05). It was fought by protagonists who, except for the Boers themselves, were foreign to the battlefields. The black natives were only marginally involved in the conflict, except those who were, for the first time in recent war history, armed by whites to fight against whites. The Boer War was an unequal struggle fought by two Germanic nations at the southern tip of Africa. Citizens of other European nations supported both the nations at war. However, this book concerns itself only with those who fought on the side of the Boers.
The Anglo-Boer War broke out on 11 October 1899. The Boers of the Orange Free State and the South African Republic (ZAR) did not have to face the all-powerful World Empire of Great Britain entirely on their own. In total, about 3000 volunteers from Europe (and some from America) joined the Boers in arms. Among them were farmers and adventurers, mineworkers and gold diggers, teachers and doctors, German counts, French mercenaries, Russian politicians, Irish fighters from the wars against the Red Indians in America and revolutionaries from Eire, Dutch attorneys and Scandinavian Berserks. This book is dedicated to these men, who distinguished themselves in an act untainted by our materialistic and decadent fun and games culture like noble heroes emerging from a nostalgic epic.
This book does not intend to rekindle grudges or create hatred towards former enemies. Most of the enemy soldiers and officers were obeying orders and suffered tribulations similar to those suffered by the Boers and volunteers.
Those who fell far away from home on the battlefields recorded in history – e.g. Elandslaagte, Magersfontein or Spioenkop – were European people. They died, above all, in the name of an ideal: freedom and justice.

It focuses on the career of Field Marshal Paul Sanford, 3rd Baron Methuen (1845-1932), whose traditional military training, used so effectively in Queen Victoria's small wars, was put to the test by the modern challenges of the South African War. A subsidiary aim of this work is to correct and refine the historical consensus that Methuen's campaign in the South African War was plagued by practical errors and poor judgement. The South African War was a crucial transitional episode in the history of the British army. Unlike Great Britain's other expeditions, it required the concentrated resources of the entire empire. It was a modern war in the sense that it employed the technology, the weaponry, the communications, and the transportation of the second industrial revolution.

Through detailed analyses of Methuen's campaigns, this study demonstrates that both Methuen and the British Army were not prepared for modern warfare. Despite this, Methuen and the British officer class were able to make the necessary transition to defeat the Boers and propel the British army into the twentieth century.

PAINTING THE MAP RED - Canada and the South African War, 1899-1902
by Carman Miller

238x158mm, 557 pp. Maps and illustrations. Paperback. ISBN 0 86980 939 3

For almost three years the Canadian public was mesmerized by the war. It affected trade, industry, transportation, fashion, discourse, literature, graphics, and music. By the time the Anglo-Boer War ended in May 1902, 7 368 young soldiers and 16 nurses had sailed from Canada for South Africa. About 270 died there, killed in battle or by disease.

Carman Miller explains why men volunteered for service in this distant conflict despite the rancorous pre-war debate on the wisdom of Canadian participation. He examines the difficulties of leading citizen soldiers and compares the differing styles of leadership. He also reveals how the soldiers' experiences in the field and the public's perceptions of the war altered Canadian opinion, politics, and military development.

No official nominal rolls or formal service records were ever compiled of these women who came from throughout the British Isles, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and of course South Africa.

This 90-page register presents a great deal of previously scattered and unpublished data, and is intended as a research tool: readers are invited to share information which will add to or amend the records so that the remarkable contribution of these women can finally be told.

German General Staff official history, The War in South Africa.

To mark the 100th anniversary of the Anglo Boer War, The Battery Press is pleased to announce a special limited edition reprint of the two volume German General Staff official history, The War in South Africa. Originally published shortly after the end of hostilities, the essential object of this work was the instruction of the German officer. The criticisms it contains point out not only alleged British faults and errors, but what, in the opinion of the Great German General Staff at Berlin, the British ought to have done. In Volume I, the authors provide a framework for that conflict with a review of the theater of war, the Boer forces and the tactics, armament and equipment of the British Army. The battles of Colenso and Magersfontein are covered along with operations of the Western Theater of War from the assumption of command by Lord Roberts until the surrender of Cronje.
The period covered in this initial volume is from October 1899 to February 1900. Volume I has 280 pages of text, 9 large strategic/tactical maps in two cover pockets and two illustrations.

Volume II begins in March 1900 through September 1900. It provides details on events in Natal after the battle of Colenso up to the relief of Ladysmith. Also covered are events in the summer of 1900 in the south-east of the Free State. Volume II concludes with a tactical retrospect of the course of the war from a German point of view. Volume II has 374 pages, 9 strategic/tactical maps in two cover pockets and five illustrations. This set will be in green cloth with black and gold presentation. The Imperial German eagle will be on the cover. The set is designed to match Battery Press reprints of the German General Staff histories for the 1866 war with Austria and the Franco-German War of 1870-71.

The German Official Account of the War in South Africall retail for US$99.95 plus $5.00 shipping. The First British Occupation of the Cape
by T.D.Potgieter

The first in a series of publications by the Castle Military Museum.

Since the first British occupation of the Cape of Good Hope in 1795, Britain has greatly influenced the history of Southern Africa. As Potgieter expains, with the exception of a short period of three years, when the Cape fell under the control of the Batavian Republic, British control of the greater Cape and later an extensive part of the subcontinent, continued deep into the twentieth century. The reasons for the British takeover were related to the commercial value of Britain's trade with East. As trade needed protection and ports, sea power was crucial for Britain's imperial interests and hence supremacy at sea was desired. In essence it was British sea power and the lack of a comparable ability amongst her opponents, which made the conquest of the Cape possible.

This history primarily deals with how the British takeover of the Cape occurred, the actions of the opposing sides and the different people who oversaw and participated in the process.

The Forts of the Liesbeeck Frontier
by D Sleigh

A very readable publication which offers information on a little known aspect of South Africas' past, and the second in the series on Cape Military History, which is published annually.

The Dutch East India Company's trade with the East as well as its trade route are examined, the importance of the geographical position and strategic role of Table Bay are shown, and the problems that beset the Company's new maritime replenishment station that was established in 1652 are explained. The effects of a European commercial settlement on the local aboriginal herdsman, the privations of the settlers and their contest with the Khoina for the resources of the fertile Liesbeeck Vatley, are all dealt with in detail A number of manned forts were built along the Liesbeeck River at this time, which became the first of many Eastern Frontiers in this country's history and the one that had the most lasting effect.

This is a well-researched publication which caters for the casual reader as well as the more serious student of military history.

From: David Merrington
Subject: Anglo-Boer War Figurines

Dear Sir,
I am a miniaturist sculptor. I am working on a series of zinc-cast 200mm hand-painted figurines to commemorate the SA War. The first of these, which I am now marketing, is a figurine of a sergeant in the Gordon Highlanders. I am working on a Boer figure, a lancer, a drummer boy, a rating from the Naval Brigade, and other types from the war. I would be very grateful if your society could add my web address to your list of centenary links.

Yours sincerely,
David Merrington (www.fieldcraft.co.za)
