NEWSLETTER NO. 5,
SOUTH AFRICAN MILITARY HISTORICAL SOCIETY.
AS THIS WILL MOST PROBABLY BE THE LAST NEWSLETTER BEFORE THE
INAUGURAL MEETING OF THE SOCIETY IS HELD, IT IS DESIRED TO GIVE YOU
FINAL DETAILS OF WHAT HAS TAKEN PLACE AND WHAT IS PROPOSED FOR
FUTURE DEVELOPMENT.
A LETTER TO THE EDITORS OF ALL THE LARGER NEWSPAPERS IN THE
COUNTRY HAS RESULTED IN A CONSIDERABLE INCREASE IN PROSPECTIVE
MEMBERSHIP. ONE OF THESE LETTERS WAS SEEN BY AN S.A.B.C. NEWSMAN
WHO WROTE AN ITEM WHICH WAS BROADCAST IN THE NEWS DURING JUNE. WE CAN
EXPECT FURTHER PUBLICITY FOR THIS ATTEMPT FROM THE S.A.B.C
SEVERAL PERSONS HAVE WARNED ME THAT VERY LITTLE ASSISTANCE WILL
BE FORTHCOMING FOR THIS UNDERTAKING. AS THE SOCIETY MUST OF NECESSITY
HAVE A HEADQUARTERS, AND AS PROMISE OF ASSISTANCE HAS COME FROM THAT
INSTITUTION WF WILL USE THE S.A. NATIONAL WAR MUSEUM FOR THE
PURPOSE. THIS DECISION PLACES THE BULK OF THE SOCIETY'S WORK ON
THE MEMBERS RESIDENT IN JOHANNESBURG AND THE SURROUNDING AREAS.
AS MATTERS CANNOT DRAG ON INDEFINITELY IT HAS BEEN DECIDED TO
HOLD OUR FIRST A.G.M. IN OCTOBER. YOU WILL BE NOTIFIED OF THE DATE
AT A LATER STAGE. KINDLY ALSO WATCH THE PRESS AS IT IS INTENDED TO
RELEASE A STATEMENT TO THEM ONCE THE DATE HAS BEEN FINALISED,
MEMBERS IN OTHER PARTS OF THE COUNTRY WILL HAVE LITTLE TO HOLD
THEIR INTEREST AND IT IS PROPOSED THAT BRANCHES BE FORMED IN THE
LARGER CITIES AND TOWNS WHERE MEMBERSHIP IS SUFFICIENT FOR THE
PURPOSE, IN THIS WAY THERE WILL BE GREATER ACTIVITY WHICH IS PERHAPS
THE GREATEST SINGLE FACTOR TOWARDS THE SUCCESS OF THIS VENTURE.
LET US NOW SEE SOME OF THAT ACTIVITY THROUGH YOUR LETTERS.
SURELY GENTLEMEN, YOU ARE NOT ALL IN AGREEMENT WITH THE INFORMATION
YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN.?
THE FOLLOWING IS QUOTED FROM A LETTER RECEIVED FROM THE
DIRECTOR OF THE S.A. NATIONAL WAR MUSEUM: ''IF SUFFICIENT ARTICLES
OF A HIGH STANDARD ARE MADE AVAILABLE BY MEMBERS I FEEL CONFIDENT
THAT IT WILL NOT BE DIFFICULT TO OBTAIN ASSISTANCE FROM THE MUSEUM
FOR THE PUBLICATION OF A JOURNAL. TO ENSURE THIS I THINK THE SOCIETY
WOULD HAVE TO AFFILIATE TO THE MUSEUM OR USE THE MUSEUM AS ITS
OFFICIAL HEADQUARTERS.''
LASTLY, REMEMBER IT IS YOU WHO THE SOCIETY IS GOING TO WORK
FOR AND IT IS YOU WHO MUST DO ALL IN YOUR POWER TO ASSIST IN MAKING
IT A SUCCESS FOR YOURSELF.
