THE NEXT TWO MEETINGS IN 1990 TAKE PLACE AS DETAILED BELOW IN THE DU TOIT ROOM OF THE ATHENAEUM 154 CAMPGROUND ROAD, NEWLANDS,AT 8 P.M.
"Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few"(Winston Churchill: 1940)
"He must be thinking of our liquor bills!"(Battle of Britain pilot)
The Battle fought fifty years ago above Britain by Dowding's famed "few", from July to October, reaching its peak on 15th September, proved of profound historical significance. Had the Germans successfully swept their opponents from the sky, Britain could not have avoided invasion and defeat. With all Europe subjugated, Germany and Japan would have met on the borders of India. The undivided might of the German war effort would have fallen on Russia, with the United States completely isolated.
GUEST SPEAKER: MR. A.D. APPLEBY. As a young RAF Signals Officer at Biggin Hill airfield he not only witnessed the momentous events but elso participated in them, and his memories thus have a fascinating and very real relevance at this time.
Now for a battle of a different sort, fought 145 years before the Battle of Britain and closer to home .......
