Poet, horseman, soldier .......... murderer?
Lieutenant Harry Morant, an Australian officer serving in South Africa during the Anglo-Boer War, was executed at Pietersburg on 27th February 1902 by a firing party from the Cameron Highlanders. His crime? Wilful murder of civilians. Yet to this day his guilt remains shrouded in doubt. Killer? Or scapegoat? Since then no Australian soldier has been tried on a capital charge by a British Army Court.
