CAPE TOWN BRANCH

October 1988

THE NEXT TWO MEETINGS TAKE PLACE AS DETAILED BELOW, IN THE DU TOIT ROOM OF THE ATHENAEUM, NEWLANDS, COMMENCING AT 8P.M.

THURSDAY 13TH OCTOBER 1988: "CHARLES WARREN - SOLDIER AND ARCHAEOLOGIST", a talk by MR. NORMAN DU TOIT.

Though Lt. General Sir Charles Warren (1840-1926), a versatile and gifted man, exhibited an unfortunate contrasting tendency to blot his copybook during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902, he remains an historical personage of interest. Born in Bangor, Wales, he had a varied and exciting career. As a young officer in the Royal Engineers he was temporarily seconded by the War Office to assist the Palestine Exploration Fund in the clearing away of the debris of centuries which was clogging the water supply to Jerusalem, and also to excavate at Solomon's Temple. Later, he played a prominent part in the Bechuanaland Expedition of 1885, widely referred to as the Warren Expedition.

THURSDAY 10TH NOVEMBER: "RHODESIA". Rhodesia's Unilateral Declaration of Independence on 11th November 1965 dramatically changed the course of its history. A panel of persons who actively participated in events during the post UDI period, in a military, police or civil role, will chat informally about the years which followed, giving an interesting personal perspective to a not so ordinary chapter of history.
