THE NEXT TWO MEETINGS TAKE PLACE AS DETAILED BELOW, COMMENCING AT 8 P.M.

JOINT S.A. MILITARY HISTORY SOCIETY/CAPE TOWN AVIATION ENTHUSIASTS' CLUB MEETING:
THURSDAY 12TH MARCH 1987: "ABOVE THE TRENCHES"
, a slide-illustrated presentation by nationally renowned military historian, Major Darrell Hall, of Johannesburg.

Meticulously researched and documented in detail, this is the true story of a young South African, 2nd Lieutenant Norman Bailey Lovemore and of what befell him from 1916 during his service as a pilot in the British Royal Flying Corps and the R.A.F. till the end of World War one. It is also, fascinatingly, the story of a counterpart on the German side, Oberleutnant Erwin Jollasse, with whom all unknowingly Norman Lovemore came into frequent contact.

Both figures who feature in this tale are still alive. Norman Lovemore lives in Port Elizabeth and Erwin Jollasse, a retired Lieutenant-General, is in Germany. A major portion of the story is based on interviews which Major Hall had with them.

NOTE: AS THE MEETING IS A JOINT ONE, MEMBERS OF THE CAPE TOWN AVIATION ENTHUSIASTS' CLUB WILL BE ABLE TO ATTEND FREE OF CHARGE.

VENUE: AVIATION ENTHUSIASTS' CLUB MEMBERS SHOULD NOTE THAT THE MEETING WILL BE HELD AT THE NORMAL CLUB VENUE, THE J.P. DUMINY ROTARY HALL, UNDERNEATH THE BRIDGE IN CAMPGROUND ROAD, NEWLANDS. MILITARY HISTORY SOCIETY MEMBERS PLEASE NOTE THAT THE HALL IS IMMEDIATELY NEXT TO THE ATHENAEUM AT WHICH THE SOCIETY'S MONTHLY MEETINGS ARE CUSTOMARILY HELD.

THURSDAY 9TH APRIL: VENUE - THE CUSTOMARY ONE, THE DU TOIT ROOM OF THE ATHENAEUM, 154 CAMPGROUND ROAD, NEWLANDS.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (A NOTICE WILL BE ISSUED SEPARATELY TO MEMBERS), TO BE FOLLOWED BY A 16mm DOCUMENTARY FILM, "WAR UNDER THE SEA", a history of submarine warfare over more than two centuries, from the first submarine attack off New York in September 1776 to the great battles which concluded the Second World War, and the subsequent advent of the nuclear powered submarine. The first hand-cranked, one-man submarines armed with drills and 150 lbs of gunpowder, were rapidly superseded by more sophisticated ironclads; the combination of electric with diesel engines and the addition of torpedoes soon established the submarine in its modern form. Submarines challenged the might of the Dreadnoughts during the First World War, and the course of history was changed by the sinking of the Lusitania. In the Second World War submarines played a crucial part in the blockade of Britain, the struggle in the Mediterranean, and the final defeat of Japan.
