THURSDAY 10TH JULY: KEN GUNN MEMORIAL MEETING: "THE SECRET WAR"
a slide-illustrated talk by Major Darrell Hall, military historian and immediate past Chairman of the Society in Johannesburg, on the secret aspects of the 1939-1945 war against Germany, covering code-breaking, the double agent, deception and political intrigue. This will be preceded by one of the famous Metro-Goldwyn-Hall presentations!
Past programmes presented over the years by Major Hall both in Johannesburg and Durban have always earned high praise, and it is strongly recommended that you make every endeavour to attend, no matter what the state of the weather!
NOTE: Major Hall, educated at Michaelhouse, Natal, and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1948. Having qualified as a parachutist and a Commando he served in both the Parachute Brigade and the Royal Marine Commando Brigade. He participated in the Anglo-French invasion of Egypt and the Indonesian confrontation in Borneo, and his service also took him to the Suez Canal Zone, Cyprus, Jordan and the Far East, with a spell in Vietnam as Assistant Military Attaché.
He retired from the British Army in 1968 and returned to South Africa where he joined the family business. He has been a member of, and extremely actively involved with, the S.A. Military History Society in the Transvaal since 1969.
THURSDAY 14TH AUGUST: "SOLDIER ARTISTS OF THE BOER WAR: 1899-1902".
Dr. Ryno Greenwall, a Boer War authority, will discuss the background, life, activities and works of some of the combatants, both Boer and British, who recorded happenings of the period in the form of paintings. The works of newspaper representatives will be included, as well as of men who became prisoners-of-war. The talk will be illustrated with slides and an exhibition of paintings.
ADVANCE DETAILS: THURSDAY 11TH SEPTEMBER: a talk by Mr. Patrick Cullinan on "COLONEL R.J. GORDON & HIS DIARIES". Goidon was the Dutch Commander at the Cape at the time of the First British Occupation, and subsequently committed suicide.
