Hugh Wilfred Hall, Uncle of the Society's National Chairman, Major Darrell Hall, was born in Durban in 1894. After participating in the German South West African campaign he went to England to join the British Army in orrler to serve on the Western Front, and as a 2nd Lieutenant was killed at Bullecourt, south east of Arras in France, on 15 May 1917.
Major Hall is specially coming down from Johannesburg to present an illustrated account of the dramatic results of his research into his Uncle's activities. Major Hall's contributions to programmes in Johannesburg, as well as to the Durban Branch, are, of course renowned, and not to be missed - we are indeed fortunate and honoured to be able to share in one of them for the first time. Proceedings will commence with one of Major Hall's famous "Metro-Goldwyn -Hall Presents!" productions.
THURSDAY 13TH JUNE: KEN GUNN MEMORIAL MEETING. Documentary film show:
(a) GLENCOE , dealing with the Battle which took place on 13th February 1692;
(b) MAN OF 5TEEL, the story of the Russian dictator, Joseph Stalin.
Born Iosif Vissarionivich Djugashvili in a small town in Georgia, the man who later called himself Joseph Stalin (1879-1953) rose from bitter poverty to become one of the most powerful men in the world. From 1929 to 1953 he ruled the Soviet Union virtually unchallenged, ruthlessly executing or jailing all opposition and exercising power with total autocratic authority. Compiled entirely from archival material, this film examines Stalin in relation to the history of his country from before the Revolution to the aftermath of his death. In particular, it discusses the growth of revolutionary sentiments, Stalin's enmity towards Trotsky, the terror of his personal dictatorship, and his leadership during World War Two.
