News-sheet No. 94. DURBAN BRANCH May 1981.

PAST EVENTS

At the monthly get-together on 14th May, our Chairman, Commandant 'SB' Bourquin, gave a repeat presentation of his illustrated talk on "A True Freedom Fighter - Andreas Hofer". This was a greatly improved version of an earlier talk which he gave in February 1980, in that during a recent trip to Europe he had carried out some local researches at Innsbruck (Austria) and had added greatly to the number and variety of colour slides. Particularly interesting was his description' of one of the world's largest paintings which depicts the Battle of the Tyroleans under Hofer against the combined French and Bavarian armies at Berg Isl in 1809. This circular painting which is housed in a huge rotunda at Innsbruck is contained on one sheet of canvas ten meters high and one hundred meters long joined along only one seam. The canvas weighs seven tons and the artist, Professor Zeno Diemer, used up four tons of paint in the process.

After a lively discussion a vote of thanks to 'SB' was moved by 'Midge' Carter.
