THURSDAY 11TH JUNE: DOCUMENTARY FILM SHOW

1. "BATTLE OF CASINO" : Compiled from original and documentary material, this film deals with tha famous battle in Italy in 1944 and the controversial bombing of the Monastery and the Town, and includes interviews with the two opposing commanders, Generals Fridolin von Senger and Mark Clark.

2. "THE FIRST CASUALTY" : "The first casualty when war comes", says the American politician Hiram Johnson, "is truth", and the "assassin of truth", continues this film, "is propaganda". Written and narrated by the historian John Terraine, it takes a look at the purpose and nature of propaganda, focussing on the exaggeration and outright lies put out during World War One. Though the press constituted the chief instrument of propaganda, the new medium of the motion picture played its part and the film includes examples of both. Terraine argues that a backlash after the war was instrumental in making the public ignore the rise of Nazi Germany.
