LAST MEETING - JOHANNESBURG BRANCH APRIL 9TH 1987.
The evening's business commenced with the 21st Annual General Meeting. The Chairman, Mr. Ian Uys, reviewed the many activities of the Society during the past year in his Chairman's report. Mr. Mike Marsh, Hon. Secretary/Treasurer, advised the meeting of the sound financial position of the Society. The membership of the Society is now 559, comprising, 405 Johannesburg, 116 Durban and 38 Cape Town. Mr. Ian Uys was unanimously re-elected Chairman. The Committee was also re-elected, as were the auditors, Gavin Moore and Company. The Committee consists of:
Mrs. Helen Murchison presented Dr. Stanley Monick with the R.G. Murchison Memorial Prize for his article "The Poets under Fire" in the June 1986 issue of the Military History Journal.

The venue for the Johannesburg meetings is the J.C. Lemmer Auditorium, S.A. National Museum of Military History, Saxonwold, Johannesburg at 20h00.

The Durban Branch of the Society reports that an invitation has been received from THE LADYSMITH HISTORICAL SOCIETY to join its members on this outing. Interested persons should make their own reservations with the Natal Parks Board Reservations Office
Saturday 16th - To explore Nthabamnyama. Meet at turn off to Spionkop Battlefield on Bergville Road at 14h00. Speaker - Mr. Gilbert Torlage.
Sat evening - Braaivleis at Torlage's home 18h30.
Sunday 17th -Walk to VaalKrantz. Meet at detour for new national Road on Spionkop/Winterton Road. Please remember to take your own picnic lunch.

Request for Assistance - Bibliography of Indian, Dominion and Colonial Regimental Histories.
Mr. Roger Perkins is compiling the above bibliography with the assistance of contributors throughout the world. South Africa is however one area where he has, as yet, no contacts, with the result that his details of S.A. unit histories are some-what scanty. Identification of Police Unit Required.
Mr. John E. Price of Villa 7, Victoria,... Australia has sent me a photograph of 3 black policemen c1901/4. The photograph was apparently taken by a member of the Scottish Horse either during or just after the Boer War. He has asked if it is possible to estabish the police unit involved. If you think that you might be able to assist kindly contact me.

SPECIAL LECTURE
The Society has been fortunate to arrange for Professor R.V.Jones, author of the "Most Secret War", and right hand man to Winston Churchill's scientific advisor during World War II, to address a meeting of the Society on Tuesday, 28th July,1987 at 20h00.
Prof Jones will be visiting South Africa at the invitation of the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers to present the President's Invitation lecture entitled 'From Radar to Star Wars'. Prof Jones has agreed to give a non technical lecture to the Society concerning his wartime activities where he was involved with implementing and guiding the development of electronic warfare.
The lecture will be held at the Lemmer Auditorium at the South African National Museum of Military History, Erlsworld Road. Saxonwold. Johannesburg. Members and friends are free to bring along guests. Unfortunately the auditorium can only hold 180 persons and it is therefore essential that all those wishing to attend inform the Museum at 011-646-5513 that they will be present and how many will be in their party. The seats will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis with the closing date for notification being 21st July, 1987. Tea will be available after the lecture.
