MARCH 1987

LAST MEETING - JOHANNESBURG - FEBRUARY 12TH 1987

The evening's entertainment titled "Mary Rose and other Naval Occassions[sic]" consisted of an interesting pot-pourri of nautical items .

Ian Uys and Darrell Hall both shared their genealogical research with the meeting. Amongst Ian's forbears was Captain Benjamin Boyes (b 1785) who settled in Cape Town (cf. Boyes Drive). He undertook some extremely hazardous and trying voyages in the company of his wife - on one occassion[sic] just barely escaping a pirate boarding of his ship. It was also interesting to hear of Barbara Uys's relationship to Captain Smith, the master of the ill-fated Titanic. Darrell informed us of his findings concerning his ancestors, one of whom landed with the 1820 Settlers.

Darrell then showed an extract, dealing with the battleship, from the BBC video "Seapower". Peter Fox then presented the fascinating audio-visual show that he had obtained on the Mary Rose. This presentation illustrated the history of the loss of, and the recent raising of, the Tudor warship Mary Rose.

Captain Tony Spier thanked all the speakers for an extremely interesting evening.
